TAROT WITCH OF THE BLACK ROSE BY JIM BALENT AND THE LOVELY MS. HOLY GOLIGHTLY!
Look for your favorite comic shop owners in issue #32!
Yes, you heard us right, we are painted in the book!Page 8 next to Neil the Editor of Tarot Witch of the Black Rose!
is ending at #18
We are going to miss this series, as I am sure you will too.A word from the creator/writer/artist Dan Schaeffer:
Thanks for all the support everyone, it's appreciated. Now,
as tempting as it is to make up some glossy PR story about
why ending a moderately successful cult bimonthly is the
"right thing to do" or a "good career move," I'm not much
good at the silver spin. So, here are the facts. Sirius haven't
cancelled DOGWITCH, they're very happy with the way it's
going and would continue to publish it for years to come at the
current sales figure. So, hold off the hate mail. It's me. I've
decided to end it. Send your hate mail to me.
Much as I would love to keep making DOGWITCH comics
forever, the truth is that independent comics, even relatively
successful books like mine, don't generate the kind of money
required to sustain a creator in a full time job. And dropping
a written, penciled, inked, lettered, and fully produced comic
book on SIRIUS' doorstep every other month is a full time job.
Lack of money in independent publishing is just an unavoidable
economic reality of the comics business these days, but it's also
one of the reasons why I've been able to get away with so much
fun and deviance, far away from the controlling arm of The
Mainstream. I guess you can't have it both ways.
The reason some people may have heard rumours before this
announcement is because, although I only made the final decision
to finish the book very recently, I'd mentioned once or twice
that DOGWITCH was written with an eighteen-issue story arc.
The idea was to get to #18, and then see how it was doing. And
its doing okay - we've received positive reviews almost right
across the board, the writing and art styles have been getting
nods of approval from industry pros, the first trade was
endorsed by an award winning horror writer, we've been sniffed
out twice by Hollywood, and there's this message board right here
full of people spreading the love. This is all stuff I'm very proud of.
But we all know how the entertainment industry works - from comics
to movies to music, it's the same old story. Critical acclaim is not the
same thing as economic viability. Here's a quote from Warren Ellis's column on the Pulse last week
"Indie books, creator-owned books, live or die on initial orders, and
the direct market is, in its current phase, remarkably unfriendly to
original material. I heard from a retailer last week that their store's
current policy is that one indie book ordered is one less franchise
superhero book guaranteed sale."
As you all probably know, I couldn't give a crap about franchise
superhero books. I want to create that elusive "original material."
Whether you could class DOGWITCH as totally original or just another genre book is open to debate, but it's pretty obvious that the
uncompromising theme running through each and every issue is the
need to produce original art regardless of the consequences. Whether
that's music, film, comics, lifestyle, or Molotov Magick, that's what
Violet's always been about, and that's what I'm all about. I've never
been much interested in working within previously defined frameworks, and I'm still not. Moving away from bimonthly deadlines is the only way I'm going to be able to stay in comics and continue to push the envelope.
This'll be starting with Katiejane's untitled book next year, and
then after that, who knows? So, for everyone who's kindly stated
that they'll be following my work after DOGWITCH, this is the
route we'll be taking. You're all invited. It ain't gonna be pretty,
but then, like I said before, neither am I.
In the meantime, there are still another five issues to go.
DOGWITCH#14 is at the printers, and #15 is already completed
and ready to go. I'm going to end this thing right, don't worry.
I'll start up another thread about the future of Spitting Nails
(the messageboard) later, but in the meantime, thank you for
supporting DOGWITCH. I mean it. I wouldn't have even got this far without you.

Cyndi has just had another letter printed in Tarot, Witch of The Black Rose #19. It's a combination of a couple of emails she and Holly sent back and forth, a couple of ( naked, it's always about being naked, lol ) edited phone conversations.
